Title: Relation between SR and SR Forum???
Post by: Holland_SR on September 29, 2011, 04:35 pm

Are the main site and the forum run by the same people??

Having a particular username on SR doesn't automatically get you the same name/pw on the forum right?

It would be a security risk if they are two different beasts, I am sure many people will use the same password for SR and for the forum..

people shouldn't be lazy dealing with their own security. This is official SR forums, same owners etc. I remember forums used to be on the main site. There must be a good reason for them to be separately. One thing that pops into mind that this one even if the main site goes down we will still have a way to get official information.

This is correct.
The forums original were on the main site and of a poorer quality forum.
Also the forums were put on a didn't server so when the main site went down there could be some kinda communication between the members and with Silk Road.
After the Mt Gox Black Friday incident and the Gawker Article the SR main site was flooded with so many ppl that it was crashing on a regular basis so this forum was created to help alleviate the traffic and two keep communication between members intact both vendors and customers could still talk to each other and the panic of not have an order trapped soley on SR was some what lessened.
It was also instructed to not use the same passwords for the main site and the forums because of the Mt Gox security incident.
So many members actually switch their passwords up on both sites on a regular basis to keep up personal security.  It;s fairly easy to exchange a encrypted message with someones PGP public key to verify that the vendor/person on the forums is the same as on the main site.

yeah I hear ya, it would be nice if there was a way to sync your SR profile with your forum presence.

there's sort of a solution, which I've noticed most major vendors have adopted, which is simply linking to your SR seller's page in your forum avatar/profile/signature.

for those of us with the same name on both it's nice, because there's less doubt (why would I want to send you to some other dude's vending page?)  but for those with different names on each, it can lead to confusion.
